CJFE sponsors second annual journalism fellowship - call for applications
Toronto, March 27

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is pleased to announce its second annual Donner/CJFE Journalist-at-Risk Fellowship to help a deserving journalist from abroad. (See details in Call for Applications below).

CJFE, along with Massey College and the Donner Foundation, offers the Fellowship for the 2003-2004 academic year to give a foreign journalist a mid-career sabbatical in Canada.

The fellowship covers expenses for a journalist to spend an academic year (eight months) at Massey College in Toronto, auditing courses of his or her choice offered throughout the University of Toronto. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to meet Canadian journalists and to hone his or her skills further.

"We are delighted to be able to again offer this tremendous opportunity," CJFE President Arnold Amber said. "Canada's journalists have always fought on the side of freedom of expression for journalists around the world and this fellowship continues that tradition."

Deadline for applications is Friday, April 25, 2003. The second Fellow will be chosen by a CJFE jury and announced June 2, 2003. S/he will arrive in Canada next September to begin his or her studies.

The first Fellowship was awarded last year to Konstantin Parshin, a journalist from Tajikistan who spent the 2002-2003 academic year at Massey College. Of his experience, Parshin wrote:
"CJFE and Massey College provided me with shelter and became my second home... my eight-month stint was not just a long educational vacation from my routine journalistic activities in Tajikistan. There was hardly a day when I didn't strike up a new acquaintance."
CJFE is an association of journalists, writers, producers and media workers dedicated to the ideal of free expression and journalistic rights in Canada and around the world.
